New season 2020/21

Alterations of season Opening and start of Ticket Sales

More performances, but less audience: in keeping with the restrictions currently in place due to the coronavirus pandemic in Germany, the concerts of the Philharmonic State Orchestra must take place in a different manner than originally planned. The Philharmonic and Kent Nagano begin their sixth joint session with an open-air performance on the open-air stage in Hamburg's Stadtpark on September 10, 2020. The open-air concert originally planned for Rathausmarkt will thus take place on a smaller scale and with an altered programme: up to 1,000 visitors are permissible; the programme is still being decided and will be announced soon – watch this space!

Programme changes also affect the Philharmonic Concerts at the Elbphilharmonie in September, October and November: the First Philharmonic Concert on September 27/28 under the baton of Kent Nagano will now feature works by Hindemith, Ligeti, Mahler and Schubert instead of Shostakovich and Beethoven; the soloists are the tenor Julian Prégardien and horn player Marie-Luise Neunecker. Mozart's Don Giovanni Overture and excerpts from his German Dances a swell as Strauss' Der Bürger als Edelmann will be performed during the 2nd Philharmonic Concert on October 25/26, which had originally featured Ligeti and Brahms. The Haydn programme of the 3rd Philharmonic Concert on November 22/23 with Andreas Spering will be shortened, just like the programmes of the 1st and 2nd Chamber Concerts on October 18 and November 15. An autumn highlight is the Special Beethoven Concert at the Elbphilharmonie: opera star Pretty Yende sings Beethoven's concert aria "Ah! Perfido" on October 9; Kent Nagano conducts the Coriolan Overture and Symphony No. 2 by Beethoven in his anniversary year.

The concerts of the Philharmonic Academy have been postponed to November 5, 6 and 8; they will take place on the stage of the Hamburg State Opera. The world premiere of Matthew Ricketts' Clarinet Concerto – a commission by the Philharmonic State Orchestra – featuring principal clarinettist Rupert Wachter as the soloist can be played on the opera stage with the orchestra pit levelled, just like Johannes Brahms' Serenade No. 2. The other two Academy Concerts include chamber music, presenting not only a soloist from the orchestra's own ranks (the Philharmonic's oboist Thomas Rohde), but also the American violin virtuoso Jimmy Lin, who will perform works by Mozart, Brahms and Tchaikovsky with the Philharmonic's strings.

jung – For our young audiences aged 8 and up, we have planned a Family Concert with Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. On the main stage of the State Opera, the Philharmonic State Orchestra makes the witch Baba-Yaga, chirping chicks and the shouts of market vendors resound in splendid colours. Nor do students have to do without our concert performances: smaller ensembles of the Philharmonic visit elementary and secondary schools, bringing Mussorgsky's Pictures to life in schoolyards, intermission halls and assembly spaces.

Your subscription has been suspended through the end of the year 2020, since we are unfortunately unable to offer you your regular subscription seats due to limited seating capacities. However, subscribers have the possibility to purchase tickets for this period with priority and at a discount.
